Down

“Down” refers to the layer of insulation found under the feathers of ducks and geese. Down duvet inserts are filled with 100% white goose/duck down (down is the softest part of the geese/duck feather layers). They provide warmth and are very lightweight.  The down inserts are comfortable to sleep in and the natural fibers allow the duvet to breathe. The cost of the down duvet insert is higher than an alternative duvet insert. Some may not be recommended for the wash. The down insert may in some cases cause allergy for people sensitive to this type of filling.

Down Alternatives

Down alternative duvet inserts are stuffed with synthetic materials like polyester. Down alternatives are usually hypoallergenic and machine washable. The cost of the down alternative is less expensive than the down depending on the type of filling and the thread count of the duvet.

The Low Down

Down has naturally higher fill power, so a down insert will be warmer while requiring less stuffing to do so. Down tends to breathe more and be warmer, while down alternative tends to be more affordable and more comfortable for people with allergies.
