At Venus, we want our clients to be well-educated on how linens work. This will give you the confidence you need when shopping for products for your hotel, spa, cruise line, restaurant, medical facility, government office, or institutional laundry. What are the benefits of twisting yarn? We are going to look at three benefits that yarn twist has on the end product.
- Fiber strength – Twisting fibers together makes them strong. Twisting two fibers together makes the yarn much tougher to break. Adding a third strand increases the strength even more.
- Continuous length – When yarns are twisted from fibers of different lengths, the continuous length can be extended. This is how textiles of all shapes and sizes can be made.
- Fray resistance – Even a small amount of twist reduces the likelihood of fraying and keeps the fabric from being damaged by abrasion. This is because each time the yarn is twisted, it makes the fibers stick to one another harder.
While twist provides all of these benefits, the pressure created can actually have the opposite effect and weaken the fabric if it is twisted too many times per inch. At some point, the twisting goes from creating the right amount of cohesion to strengthen the fibers to creating too much wear and tear on the fabric.
